Mission
The purpose of The Green Prairie Foundation for Sustainability/GPFS
is to support and develop the use of sustainable building materials
and other renewable resources through cooperative ventures, collaborations
and partnerships with agricultural, manufacturing and building
industries, government agencies and entities, private individuals,
businesses and organizations.
Goals
• A network
of state and regional partners and collaborators developed to
assist with and support programs, projects, and events related
to the use of strawbale and natural building methods and materials.
• The publication
of The Last Straw, an international quarterly journal
of straw-bale construction and natural building methods and materials.
• Develop programs
and projects to demonstrate the benefits of building the natural
way.
• Design/build
school-ecotourism center – a teaching/learning center in
central Nebraska.
• Education
and training for architects and engineers, builders and owner/builders,
contractors and subcontractors, developers, bankers and
lenders, real estate agents and appraisers, and insurers to design,
develop, construct, finance, insure and offer to the general public
well-designed, well-constructed buildings applying the principles
of sustainability.
• A salvage
cooperative and network to gather, house and distribute salvageable
building materials using volunteers and in collaboration with
government agencies, recycling/reuse programs and other sources
to staff and operate the venture.
• Construction
of affordable and mainstream housing utilizing alternative materials
and methods for construction and incorporating energy and water
systems.
• Creation
of new markets for agricultural crop residues and fibers.
• Research
and evaluation of plant and crop materials to determine properties
that would be valuable in converting these resources into a wide
variety of products.
The
Green Prairie Foundation for Sustainability/GPFS is a Nebraska
nonprofit and public charity with 501(c)(3) tax status dedicated
to education and training, research and evaluation, and promotion
supporting sustainable agriculture and manufacturing, and the
building of structures and communities to preserve the planet
and its resources to the benefit of all people.

Qualifications for Board Members
Green Prairie Foundation for Sustainability (GPFS)
1. Support the mission, goals and activities of the Foundation.
2. Be available and have the time to attend board and other meetings;
read and respond to emails and other forms of correspondence,
reports and documents pertaining to the Foundation's activities
in a timely way.
3.
Be willing to hold an office and perform its duties and functions;
be willing to accept responsibility and liability for overseeing
the legal and fiduciary responsibilities of the Foundation.
4. Participate in developing a program for fundraising to support
the Foundation's mission, goals and activities; learn how to and
be willing to ask for funding and support; learn how to evaluate
grant proposals; participate in identification of potential donors,
funding and grant sources.
5. Provide administrative oversight and guidance regarding policies,
programs, research and projects of the Foundation.
